Why Talmud & Oral Law?

The Talmud is the foundational text of Jewish culture. The Department of Talmud and Oral Law spans from the Tannaitic literature to the Babylonian Talmud and Jerusalem Talmud, Midrash, and post-Talmudic works into the modern era. All of these works are studied carefully and critically, considering their philological, historical, literary and legal dimensions. Bar-Ilan University’s Talmud department is the largest of its kind in the world, and its faculty are leaders of their fields.
